Chicago Air Show 2018

Originating as part of a “Family Day Celebration” back in the summer of 1959, the Chicago Air and Water Show has grown to be the largest and oldest free admission air and water exhibition in the United States. The free, two-day event draws an audience of over two-million, spread out on colorful beach blankets and lawn chairs along dazzling Lake Michigan.

Many camp out early, hoping to secure the best spots to catch the spectacular demonstrations by military and civilian aircrafts, boats, and diving and parachute teams. It’s a thrilling, multi-sensory experience — soak up the sun, breathe in the crisp lake breezes and feel the rumble of jet engines soaring overhead.

The 60th annual show, presented by Shell Oil Products U.S and the City of Chicago, will take to the skies and waterfront from 10am-3pm each day, with North Avenue Beach as the center point.

The prime viewing location for the Chicago Air and Water Show is at ground zero: North Avenue Beach from Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street.

Here are the best Instagram posts that captured both the high-flying stunts and energy of this year’s edition of one of Chicago’s favorite summertime traditions.

(Swipe for color and BW) // Jet watching. // I experienced my first Chicago Air and Water Show. It was awesome. I got lucky with this shot. As I turned around to follow the jet flying from the lake to behind us, I managed to capture it flying past this building. Initially I was shooting at 200mm. I changed to my Takumar 300mm f4 and boom… that 100mm difference made… a difference. ?: Pentax Takumar 300mm f4.0 . . . . #createandcapture #artofchi #flippinchi #chicity_shots #ig_chicago #thechieye #chicagovisuals #citykillerz #cc5k #all2epic #fatalframes10k #fujifilm_street #fujifilmx_chi #heatedtones #gs10k #shotz_fired #illgrammers #igtones5K #airandwatershow #mg5K #myfujifilm #serialshooters #jets #likechicago #creativetones #abc7chicago #uas10k #chicagoairandwatershow #way2ill_ #xphotographers
